In short, I created a website that uses complex algorithms to analyse the emotional arc of a story. If you want to jump straight to it then look no further: www.ebookanalyzer.com.

If you want to find out why it’s essential, please carry on reading.

Artificial intelligence is pretty confident there is only 6 types of successful stories

You might have heard the idea that all great stories fall into 6 different emotional arcs. The idea has been credited to Kurt Vonnegut and has now been somewhat proved with data. A beautiful paper by Reagan et al. (2016) used machine learning to classify thousands of the most famous novels of all time and show just that. These story arcs are:

  • ‘Rags to riches’ (rise)
  • ‘Tragedy’, or ‘Riches to rags’ (fall)
  • ‘Man in a hole’ (fall-rise)
  • ‘Icarus’ (rise-fall)
  • ‘Cinderella’ (rise-fall-rise)
  • ‘Oedipus’ (fall-rise-fall).
